The NEWTON GUNASINGHE FOUNDATION was established in 1997 with the intention of capacitate the marginalized plantation community mainly youth and women. At the same time, it had focused to involve in action oriented studies and research in relation to socio-economic, political and ethnic issues of the plantation community and the country to promote harmony and sustainability.

The institution was named after Prof. Newton Gunasinghe a sociologist who rendered a part of his life to empower the plantation community to self-reliance and to demand and defend their rights. Apart from being a lecturer at the University of Colombo, he was a plantation trade union leader and promoted an institution for the studies on the workers and peasants named “Workers and Peasants’ Institute”.

NGF 1The Newton Gunasinghe Foundation is currently registered under the company ordinance of Sri Lanka and consists of seven board members and 25 general members.

The Newton Gunasinghe Foundation house the Plantation Worker Museum in its premises which is promoted by Institute of Social Development under the guidance of Prof. Sudarshan Seneviratne, Head of Dept of Archeology, University of Peradeniya.

NGF 2The Newton Gunasinghe Foundation consists of facilities for residential training which can accommodate 30 residential and 60 non residential people with full-fledged training hall, food, and residential facilities. The organization rents the facility to who are willing to conduct training. The Newton Gunasinghe Foundation is situated in a serene natural environment surrounded by misty tea plantations and natural ponds. The institution consists of a library which has a number of materials on tea plantation worker community and the tea industry. The environment is ideal for individual researchers who need a calm and quite environment for their studies. The centre will provide food and accommodation for such researchers who wish to conduct his/her study while staying at the institution.

NGF Conference RoomThe institution is in close proximity to the second city of Sri Lanka; Kandy and nearest to the township of Gampola.
